Cheryl Lindsay

"I was 43 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two weeks later, I had a bilateral mastectomy. I was devastated and terrified. I didn't believe I would survive. I planned my funeral.

Shortly after surgery I was contacted by an OTIP representative and told about CAREpath. I agreed to participate, and began a relationship that helped me through one of the worst times of my life.

I was provided one-on-one contact with an oncology nurse. My contact provided information in a caring and compassionate manner. She was a great listener; always conscious of my emotional state and readiness to learn about breast cancer. The nurse ensured that I had accurate knowledge and understanding of my disease and prognosis. She provided current literature and research, as well as coping strategies. She encouraged me to be proactive. AS my knowledge grew, my anxiety was reduced.

The CAREpath nurse also told me what to expect when visiting the cancer centre. She advised and encouraged me to ask educated questions of the medical oncologist. I was an informed patient.

Survival is defined as "to remain alive; to continue to exist." I don't want to just survive, I want to move on and plan for the future. The Survivor Support program has continued to give me practical information and advice to ensure that I remain healthy. The lifestyle recommendations are intended to help me not just survive, but live."
